Warning about online scams

There have been recent reports that a number of online advertisements for government agencies are online scams. The scams most commonly affect people trying to contact Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), Jobcentre Plus, Student Finance and the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA).

Scam websites advertise premium-rate phone numbers instead of the correct free lines. Calls are charged between 7-13p per minute, with an additional 45p network provider charge. Ordinarily these services are completely free of charge.

The phone numbers to watch out for - and avoid - begin with either 0843 or 0847.

We advise those wanting to contact government agencies to always go through the official websites. Contact numbers for services can be found on each website.

Here is a list of official website and phone services for the above government agencies:

HMRC –  for contact numbers for HM Revenue and Customs departments.

Jobcentre Plus – for Jobcentre Plus contact numbers for new and existing claimants.

Student Finance – to contact Student Finance England. For Student Finance England call: 0300 100 0607. For Student Finance Wales – follow the link here.

DVLA - to contact the DVLA.
