Two thirds of our current members tell us that the main reason they decided to join Gingerbread was to be part of an organisation that speaks up for single parents. As the leading national charity for single parent families, our members’ voices and experiences are at the very heart of our work – driving forward our campaigns, shaping our work and helping us challenge stigma by showing the true picture of single parent life in the UK.
There are lots of ways you can be involved with Gingerbread’s work and help us push for changes that will lead to a society where single parent families are valued and treated fairly and equally.
Ways to get involved
Gingerbread campaigns to improve life for single parent families, whether that’s taking on government proposals to charge to use the Child Support Agency or breaking down the barriers to work facing single parents. By supporting our campaigns, you can take action on the issues affecting your family.
People of all ages, backgrounds and circumstance find themselves raising children on their own. In fact, one in four families is now headed by a single parent – but that doesn’t mean everyone’s experience is the same. Help us show the diversity of single parent family life, and provide comfort, reassurance and inspiration to other parents bringing up their children alone, by sharing your story – in words, pictures or even on video!
A media volunteer is someone who gives some of their time to talk to the media about their experiences as a single parent, to support Gingerbread’s work. It’s a fantastic way of tackling the stereotyping so often present in the headlines and showing people the real impact of government policies on families like yours.
Gingerbread is in the early stages of a digital transformation journey.
Our strategy for the next few years aims to make the most of digital to
provide you with the best possible services, and we need your help to
make sure that what we are doing works for you.
Lots of single parents write a blog about their experiences. It’s a great way of showing what life’s really like for their family, using their creativity and recording the highs and lows of raising children on their own. We’ve collected a list of some of our favourite UK single parent blogs from across the web – from the funny, to the moving, to the inspiring.
As a national charity, we rely on the generosity of our supporters to make sure we can reach as many of the UK’s 2 million single parents with advice, services and campaigns as possible. Take on a sponsored challenge like the British 10k, hold a bake sale in your local community or ask your friends or colleagues to sponsor you to give up chocolate – there are lots of fun ways to get involved, get your friends and family involved and get supporting Gingerbread!
Whether it’s completing a survey about our online advice and
information services, telling us how benefits changes are affecting
you, or attending a focus group to give us your views on new areas of
work, your feedback is vital to ensuring that Gingerbread continues to
provide the services and campaigns families like yours need from us.
